So, we wanted to introduce you guys to a new protein bar which we stumbled across and are now obsessed with! We have been having these bars as dessert, on the go , and as post workout recovery snacks.

RXBars are made up of no more than 8 ingredients- yes seriously! And all ingredients comply with the Paleo guidelines- they are even Whole 30 approved!

So, if you are looking for a real paleo, gluten free bar that has only natural, clean ingredients, then look no further than RXBAR’s.

Just to reiterate, their bars contain:

No GMO    |    No Dairy    |    No Soy    |    No Gluten   |    No B.S.

In fact, the makers of the RXBAR’s are so confident about their ingredients that they decided to be upfront about it, putting the ingredients of each bar on the packaging! I mean just take a look at the PB bar:

So you know that you are only going to be eating egg whites, fruits, nuts and 100% natural flavors when you munch on a RXBAR. Pretty cool!

The people behind the RXBAR believe that food should be simple and delicious without compromising nutrition- which we agree with! They also believe that food should be consumed as nature intended- again, we aren’t disagreeing here! The RXBAR’s are yummy, easy to eat, and good for you. I don’t know what else you could want in a whole food bar?

“They do not contain:  grains, added sugars, gluten, soy, dairy, or any artificial or processed ingredients.  RXBars are as prescribed by nature to give you the proper balance of high quality pure egg white protein, a healthy supply of fats, carbohydrates that are high in fiber, and natural sugars from the fruits themselves.”

RXBAR’s come in a number of different flavors- we tried them all! Although we can’t say we enjoyed them all equally as some of the flavors weren’t to our taste- for e.g. I really don’t like coffee- but the bar was still really yum- I mean look at how much chocolate and crunchy almonds were in it:

So basically, all of the bars were really good, with a slightly sticky texture, that softened when warmed, and an awesome amount of crunch from chunks of almond. Also, the flavors were clear and did not taste artificial- so common in other bars!. Perfect!

RXBAR have just released a Pumpkin Spice flavour bar which we will write a separate post about because it is so festive- but it was really yum, so don’t think we didn’t enjoy it! Look out for the Pumpkin Spice post really soon! We just wanted to rank our top 5 regular flavours here!

So here are our top 5 flavors:

At number 5 was the blueberry bar, as shown here:
photo 2 (1)

The bar was nice, I enjoyed the blueberry bar warmed slightly with a dollop of nut butter and a spoonful of applesauce.

photo 3

But, although the blueberry bar was tasty, with chunks of blueberry and nuts- it doesn’t get more real than that- the bar was a little dry- and I found the bars a bit plain and lacking in sweetness- good for someone without a sweet tooth.

Ok, so at number 4 came the Apple and Cinnamon flavor bar. I had this one as pudding last night and it had all of the flavors of my favorite pudding- apple crumble. To enjoy this bar, I warmed the bar up for 10 seconds in the microwave (don’t do more than that otherwise they get really dry) then I ripped the bar up into pieces and put it in a bowl with almond milk and a dollop of almond butter. It was so yum with loads of chunks of real apple and crunchy almonds!

Ok, so in third came the peanut butter flavor bar. We loved the PB bars (obviously), but would have liked some extra flavor squirts in them- for example some kind of strawberry swirl for extra sweetness or something like that. So, although they were very yum, they came third in our taste test.

A close runner up was the Chocolate Sea Salt bar. These tasted oh so naughty, but tasted oh so good. I loved them slightly warmed (15 secs in the microwave) and topped with a dollop of PB and some Greek yogurt. image (2)The little pockets of melty chocolate were delish, but I wasn’t so keen on the salt crystals- don’t quite get the sweet/ salty thing completely. But these bars were very good- there is no doubt about that. I mean just look at the texture- what is there not to like?:

But, in first place, our favorite flavor was Coconut Cacao, shown here:

We warmed this one up too, and loved the melted chocolate chips! Delish. The Coconut Cacao bar was yum on its own, with moreish chocolate, crunchy almond chunks and just the right amount of coconut sweetness, but because I love nut butters so much, I had the bar with a massive dollop of PB and a sprinkle of sliced almonds for a little extra crunch. It was so delish!

Like the other RXBARS the Coconut Cacao bar’s very simple, clean ingredients were shown on the packaging loud and clear. The nutrition stuff on the bar was also clear- which you can see here:

My Peanut Butter addiction is real

You name it, I’ve added peanut butter to it. A day doesn’t pass without me getting my PB fix. I enjoy it with oats in the morning, smothered on a banana as a snack, dolloped onto a sweet potato at lunch and swirled into my protein shake after a session.

I have even been known to spoon it out of the jar. But maybe its not the worst addiction to have – peanut butter, like many of the other nut butters has numerous health benefits :

  • –> Healthy Fat
  • –> High Protein
  • –> Energy Booster
  • –> Rich in Fiber
  • –> Aids Weight loss
  • –> Packed with nutrients

And its super super yummy and goes with ANYTHING! Honestly, just try it. I recommend adding it to your next stir fry for a delicious, nutty sauce, or why not put it in your sushi or rice rolls next time you make them. Peanut butter is not just for toast.

Here is a recipe for you to try:

Banana and Peanut Butter ‘Ice Cream’

Serves 2

  • 3 large, ripe bananas
  • 3 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt- if desired
  • Additional toppings e.g. chopped and roasted peanuts, berries or melted dark chocolate
  1. Cut the bananas into small chunks and freeze until solid, at least 1-2 hours.
  2. Transfer the bananas to a very strong blender and blend until smooth and creamy (This will take a few minutes and may require periodic pauses and adjustments)
  3. Within a few minutes, you should be seeing a thick, creamy ice-creamy mixture in the blender.
  4. Add the peanut butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sea salt, and anything else you might like in there (I sometimes like adding a couple of fresh or frozen strawberries- a bit like PB and J).
  5. Pulse the blender quickly to stir the ingredients all together and when everything is mixed, serve immediately.
  6. Top with additional peanut butter and other toppings of your choice!
You can put this back in the freezer to eat part of it later, but the consistency loses some of its velvetyness when you re-freeze it, so just eat the whole thing now. If you absolutely must save the rest for later, running it through the blender again before serving might help.

** But not all PBs are the same! Try and buy natural 100% peanut butter. Do not be tempted by the big brand name nut butters which often add loads of salt, oil and other unwanted ingredients to an otherwise very healthy spread. ‘Smuckers’ is one brand that offers all natural peanut butters, but there are lots out there. One of my favorites, which is available in most health food shops is Meridian, and you can buy it in 1kg tubs- perfect for other nut butter addicts like me! smuckers-peanut-butter-coupon

**** Also, remember that peanut butter is not a low fat, or low calorie food, so do not eat it by the jarful, but do enjoy it.

Other nut butters are also available, although they are a little more expensive, they are great tasting and can add variety to your meals and snacks, so why not pick up some almond or cashew nut butter next time you head to do your weekly shop? Justin’s is one brand that offers all natural almond butter- so why not give it a go- they come in a variety of flavors too!

LARABAR: a review

Larabar promotes itself on making products that are simple, pure and delicious. If I am honest, and after trying a range of their bar’s and products, I cannot argue with them. Many of their bars only contain 3 or 4 ingredients, all of which I understand and could find myself. I always find this reassuring as I prefer to eat only wholesome and natural products.

Larabar also caters for a range of special diets. Many of their bars are gluten free and vegan. Containing only nuts and fruits. In addition to this, many of their products are raw and so can be eaten by people following raw food diet.

I tried a few of their bars in order to be able to write a review, but I have since bought many more and have no doubt that I will continue to buy their products.

As a lover of apple pie I couldn’t resist trying the apple pie flavor Larabar. The bar contains only 6 ingredients, and provides a quarter cup of fruit and 5 grams of fiber. It was really tasty, being not too sweet, and lightly spiced with cinnamon and raisins. The bar also has almonds and walnuts for a little bit of crunch and a nutty finish. I decided to add a little peanut butter to the bar as I can’t get enough of the spread, but I am sure the bar would have been delicious on its own.

As it is autumn and fast aproaching the holiday season, I couldn’t say no to trying the seasonal pumpkin pie Larabar. I was a little sceptical as I am not the biggest fan of pumpkin flavoured things normally, but once I took my first bite into the bar I was proved wrong. I really enjoyed the rich festive taste of the bar. Additionally, the bar only contained 8 natural ingredients so I couldn’t say no. However, as it is a seasonal bar it is only around during the holidays, so I am going to have to stock up!

The ALT bar range are great for after training sessions as they have the added benefit of being high in protein with each bar having 10g.

As I have already mentioned, I am a lover of peanut butter and all things of that ilk. As a result when I saw that there was a peanut butter cookie Alt bar I just had to try it! I am glad I did because it was delicious. It reminded me of eating cookie dough from the mixing bowl, but with only natural and healthy ingredients eating this Alt bar left me feeling good, and not guilty for eating all of the dough! I would definitely recommend giving the Alt bar’s a try.

Another type of bar that Larabar offers is the ‘uber’. These bars are nutty and sticky. They do not contain the same amount of fruit as the other bars mentioned but what they lack in fruit they make up for in nuts! The sticky, sweetness of the bars comes from honey and brown rice syrup, not from unhealthy sugar alternatives. There are a number of flavours available. So far I have only tried the Roasted Nut Roll, but I am going to head to the shops after writing this as I want to try the other flavors that are available!
